New Topic, yes !

I am so happy that we now can discuss the Arts online, anytime !

Thanks for registering and for checking in periodically to comment, update, learn and share.

Here's today’s topic : Why do you think Women in the Arts are relegated to supportive roles, or roles in group settings, or are relegated to renegade roles, alone, out there somewhere, pioneering without much help from the arts community or from society ?
Do you think these are valid questions ?
Can you think of any women who have been marginalized thusly, and what were some of the results ? Suicide, loss of family, loss of job, mental breakdown, or the abandonment of the artistic pursuit ? Have you ever felt marginalized as a woman, especially as a woman artist ? Let me know what you think.

All the best,

Linda Ravenswood

maybe women were relegated because no one (men) really thought they could do anything except cook, clean, and please their husband. i think that back then, it was really rare to discover a women who was excelling in the arts and is fighting for their right to express their creativity.

maybe women were given an inferior role because guys still felt that that's where they should be. i agree with marissa that some thought women only belonged in the home doing things for the family. maybe some women knew this and never pursued a career in the arts. perhaps some wanted to be big, but under the circumstances of the times, never took the initiative to try to become as successful as men.

i personally can't recall a time where i have felt marginalized. especially going to an all girl school, it feels like we all get an equal opportunity to showcase our talents.

In my opinion, it's for two reasons: Either men thought women were incapable of being true artists such as themselves, or men felt threatened by the (superior) talent of some women. Or, who knows, maybe it was a bit of both!
But I agree with what marquez said about how I've never felt marginalized, especially being in an all-girls school. Many times I actually feel that women are superior to men xD But I know that's not true! We're all equal and blah, blah, blah...

Bottom line: it is unfortunate that women were put down by men long ago, with both their intelligence and creativity being insulted, but today that is mostly all in the past, and both men and women should be free to pursue their dreams without discrimination.

I think the reason why women have been relegated is because there are still many close-minded people who STILL cannot accept the fact that women were not just created to be trophy wives or typical houswives. Even in todays society, women have a hard time climbing the ladder of success since men tend to hog the status quo.
The reason I think women had to do things alone was because no one believed that women would be able to go far without stumbling. Yet little by little people are starting to realize that maybe, women actually have more passion for the arts Because they are women. As women, we natuarlly tend to be caring, passionate and loving of what we do and want. Sooner or later men have to come to the realization that women can be as successful even better at what they do than them especialyl in the arts.

with three borthers, I think I have had a bit of marginalization in my life. With them it's always the "he-man" way of life and that's it but as they come to realize that even though I do not have the brawny strength as them; I have a better grasp on reality than they have ever had.
